I’m glad I’m not alone in noticing this shift away from minimalism (for those who went too hard into the quiet luxury trend vs natural minimalists). I credit this happening in my wardrobe to rebuilding basics after 7 years of pregnancy/postpartum so now that I have well-fitting basics covered I can play with the fun and joyful pieces I desire.
I adore the outfits you put together!! I’m curious; in your opinion do statement pieces have to be colorful or can the statement be in the silhouette/construction?
I’m so glad you asked this question because after I posted the piece, the same thought came to me, and I regretted not addressing it (though the piece was already so long). On Monday, when I wore the Dries colorful pants, I paired them with a plain white shirt that reads “minimalism.” Yet, I felt the way the shirt sat on my body and how it cocooned on my back was part of the whole gestalt. In the absence of the colorful pants, it could have been a statement on its own, just for the proportion and construction.
I can’t name enough designers who work in black and white and create pieces that are nothing short of a statement based on construction, texture, volume, etc. So, to answer your question: yes, absolutely. You can make a statement without color. I feel I’ve done it many times (eloquent silence), but lately, I suppose I’ve been craving statements made through color. There’s something to be said about chromophobia, and maybe that will be material for a different post.
Thank you for being here and for inspiring so much nuanced thought in your newsletter! I love it.
I, too, have been craving COLOR or PATTERN (the all-caps is purposeful because I say it with emphasis 😂) but I also noticed that silhouettes can make the statement. I love having this discourse with you since we are both seeking these pieces 👯
can i just say: i got the same plaid tibi shirt on thredup for peanuts recently - a $20 impulse purchase. and i have been wondering why it has that zipper down the “back”. 🤦🏻♀️ i feel enlightened!
Can't statement still be minimalistic? Maybe similar to the question of Kelly, if statement means color.
When I look at your outfits, I see minimum number of pieces, one eye catcher, and all very balanced. I call myself a minimalist, I don't like layering. But I like color, I like a sculptured look. But not and and and. Even with a statement piece, I consider myself still a minimalist.
I LOVE your hero/statement pieces in these outfits- this is how I plan my outfits, around pieces that excite me. It makes me feel good all day when I’m wearing special clothes. 💕
Thank you for the link--and it sounds like we have similar daughters despite living an ocean apart!!
I've been VERY slowly writing on what this means to me... I think it's about putting my signature on an outfit. Having it convey a sense of my personality--even if it's small. Not feeling like I'm a copy/paste of online influencers and brands' PR marketing.
I love how your personality shines through in your outfits!

So inspirational!!! Love the infusion of the spectacular and special with the mundane.
