per usual, I screen shotted so many of these looks for my own idea folder! thanks for putting your thoughts and ideas and creativity out there. I am an artist too and I appreciate the vulnerability it takes. I recently bought my first crocs for my studio and love them so much i have been wearing them for "real life" ....keep writing please!

When I read the word 'tacky' my eyebrows raised. This can't be serious. You were fully right to bring up the topic. School should not judge how people dress. It was probably not intentional, they dudn't use it again. Words have power, your words too 😁

Yeah I don’t think it was intentional—might sound naive, but I am convinced most people have good intentions in this world

Not naive, positive! better to believe in the good op people

Thank you for speaking up and for writing this. I wish I had more women around me who did what you do. I would have been less snarky after I adopted the western classics to fit in as an immigrant in a very white town. It took MalcomX speeches to get me to see the problem. To have a mother who will protect and cherish your innate self, is something I wish for every daughter. Yours is lucky. ( Mine shoved a skin whitening cream into my adolescent hands and demanded I use it. )

We had “nerd day” as one of the spirit days at the school I teach in. My classes actually ended up having really great discussions about what it means to be a nerd and why so many of them had trouble coming up with costumes, how the stereotypes of being a nerd (glasses, braces, enjoying video games and combo books, reading and doing well in school) have really become normalized. So many kids just came in dressed as themselves and declared that they were nerds. Sometimes the dress up days are fun, but sometimes they definitely miss the mark.

I gotta love how the kids owned the label and re-signified it! Bravo!!!
